Bicycling related data for Chicago [Steven Vance's Wiki]

Bicycling related data for Chicago

Data that you can obtain for Chicago about cycling and transportation. I don't have links provided to the data because I'm not hosting it or I haven't found a host. But I have it all.

Goal: A list of all transportation and bicycling-related datasets available to the public.

Census

There's a lot of Census and American Community Survey data that's relevant to transportation and cycling, but I've used the following tables most often:

So how much did bicycling to work change? The table below shows the share of work commuters bicycling to work as primary mode.

Dataset Men Women Total share
ACS 2005-2009 1.4% 0.6% 1.0%
Census 2000 NA NA 0.49%

Geography

  • Bikeways - In Fusion Tables (no geography) and shapefile format. Includes trails, lanes, shared lanes, recommended routes, and access paths. Current as of March 2011.
  • Bike racks - In table and shapefile format. Current data always available at Chicago Bike Parking.
  • Bike shops - In table and shapefile format. Current data always available at Chicago Bike Shops.
  • Streets - In table and shapefile format. Includes highways and access ramps. Data from City of Chicago.
  • Transit - In table and shapefile format. Includes CTA, Metra, buses, trains, stations, bus stops. Data from variety of sources. Additional transit data (like ridership statistics) available at RTAMS.
    • CTA data - Data from Chicago Transit Authority's GTFS data
  • City boundary - Shapefile. Data from City of Chicago

Counts

  • Car counts - In table and shapefile format.
  • Bike counts - In table and shapefile format.
  • Pedestrian counts - In table and shapefile format.

All Chicago count data from Chicago Department of Transportation.

Other

  • Bike crashes - Fusion Tables and shapefile. IDOT: “These cases represent the collisions in which the contact with the Pedalcyclist was considered to be the first harmful event.”
  • Pedestrian crashes - Fusion Tables and shapefile. IDOT: “These cases represent the collisions in which the contact with the Pedestrian was considered to be the first harmful event.”
  • Car crashes - Fusion Tables and shapefile (240 MB)
  • Bike theft - Fusion Tables - Caveat: Only includes self-reported information. Bicycle theft information is not available from the Chicago Police Department because there's not a specific code for that type of theft.
  • Car theft - I think this is available on CLEARmap, also available on EveryBlock.
